Organization of a PD Teacher Portfolio

Please note that the following is not intended to dictate or endorse a prescribed method of organizing your portfolio. It is only meant to alert you to one of the many possible ways of developing your portfolio. The following section titles could be included in your portfolio. Remember—a table of contents is essential.

Section one: Background Information
  • Information on teaching context
  • Resume
  • Autobiographical sketch
  • Educational philosophical statement, teaching goals
  • Statement of faith/religious educational statement of belief
Section two: Teaching Artifacts and Reflection Documentation
  • Yearly long-range plans
  • Unit plan, including list of resources
  • Two consecutive lesson plans
  • Examples of innovative practice
  • Reflections on teaching experience (teaching journal entries) with reflective commentary by the cooperating/mentor teacher
  • Student work samples
  • Evaluation of student work (examples of assessment strategies)
  • List of classroom management strategies/approaches or discipline cycle
  • Photographs as applicable (requires written consent of parents/guardians)
  • Videotape of teaching as applicable
  • Media checklist: varied instructional technology tools, and so on
  • “Professional reading” page listing current reading materials
Section three: Professional Information
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Formal written summative evaluations
  • Postsecondary transcripts
  • Awards, honours, certificates, list of affiliations and so forth
Section four: Professional Growth
  • List of professional activities (conferences, school-based workshops and so on)
  • Contributions to the profession
  • University/formal courses taken; cocurricular activities within the school and community; teacher cohort/committee work; participation in ATA student locals
  • List of your five-year professional/personal goals

  • Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check
