The supportive role of the university faculty advisor cannot be understated. Faculty advisors are seasoned teachers with a wealth of experience and knowledge hired by teacher preparation programs in postsecondary institutions to supervise student teachers during their field experience.

Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions.

The Alberta Teachers' Association advocates the following minimum requirements for the selection of faculty advisors.

  • Possess a bachelor of education degree (minimum)
  • Possess a valid Alberta teaching certificate
  • Be an ATA member in good standing
  • Have previously supervised student teachers
  • Stay abreast of current educational trends, certification requirements and legislation related to education in Alberta
  • Demonstrate currency within a school setting (five years or less away from the classroom)
  • Possess an in-depth understanding of postsecondary teacher preparation programming including current regulations and expectations
