Establishing a Sense of Security
1) Set realistic limits that
- are general in nature,
- define expected classroom behaviour,
- define procedures and routines,
- define the rights and responsibilities of individuals and
- can be reinforced.
2) Enforce rules consistently
- Let students know when the expectations are being changed.
- Provide consistent messaging: it is more effective than threats and punishment.
3) Develop self-respect and responsibility
- Use positive reinforcement for following rules.
- Practise self-regulation.
- Work individually with students who need assistance.
- Use natural consequences.
4) Build trust
- Keep commitments.
- Demonstrate faith and trust in class members.
- Maintain consistency.
